So far I have found following problems with this router (latest firmware 1.0.0.24):
a) I connected using latest HP Envy 3D 17 laptop to 5GHz N band. I found that the file transfer speed was as good as that of my older G router. On changing several settings, I found that if I enable QoS (Enable WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) settings (5GHz a/n)), the file tranesfer speed jumped up 3-4 times. I was not even testing with media files, I was using binary files to test file transfer speed. Why should QoS effect file transfer speed within the internal network is beyond my understanding.
b) The media server does not stay up. I attached a USB drive to the USB port and enabled media server. The media players were able to detect the media servers and play the music from USB drive. Next morning, I noticed that the media server was gone. I could acess the files on USB drive and play the music files but the media players (I have several of them) failed to detect the media server. After I disabled/enabled the medaia server, it started showing up again.
c) I am not sure if this is a laptop issue but when I was testing large file transfers connected to 5GHz N band, the connection kept dropping. If I tried 3-4 times, the laptop just froze and had to be power cycled.
d) Although Netgear claims that this router is OpenSource supported, neither DD-WRT, nor OpenWRT or Tomato has any stable firmware for this version. Everything they have is alpha and not easy to install.

The only pro I can say is that web browsing speed did improve but this being advertised as a premium product, this is not the only thing I was expecting.

BTW this router was a gift from my daughter so it will not show up as purchased under my account.

I thought that this would be best overall router for the money, but I was wrong. After about two weeks of testing, this is a piece of junk. The wifi connections keeps dropping on the 2.4GHz band and devices will NOT connect (event though the SSID is still broadcasting) until the router is rebooted or the wifi is turned off (via the button on the front) and then turned back on. I will be returning this...Oh I am on the 1.00.24 version of firmware. I did not try upgrading to 1.0.025 version, since another user reported similar problems as me without success.

Router was very easy to install and I got all my devices working with it -- (DVD, DirecTV, Vonage, etc.) The online menus / setup was well done and seemingly quite robust. However, I simply could not get it to work with my Slingbox. I tried every permutation I could think of and also searched online to see if other folks had suggestions. If you do a quick search (something to the effect of "n600 slingbox install") -- others have had problems as well. I tried some of the suggestions but could not get it to work. When I switched back to my off the shelf D-Link (I had bought it a couple of years ago at MacMall and the sales person basically said there's no real difference in the various routers so just optimize on price) -- I had done speed tests of both the N600 and my cheapo D-Link and the D-Link actually came out faster based on the website I found. Not saying it's better -- but at least by that measure, the N600 didn't necessarily deliver faster speeds on that basis. I will say that on a pure visceral reaction basis, I thought the N600 was faster in just loading web pages and the like -- but that could've just been me psychologically trying to justify the upgrade.

All in all, I would've been happy to keep and continue using the N600 for all the reasons I mentioned -- but I like my Slingbox and since I couldn't get it to work, I returned the N600.
